The Chinese are said to have used an early form of reflexology more than 5000 years ago in their use of pressure therapies. Egyptian tomb artwork dating from about 2330BC from the tomb of Ankhmahor at Saqqara, also known as the Physician’s Tomb, shows foot massage treatment. The translation reads “Don’t hurt me”, the practitioner replies “I shall act so you praise me.” These ancient forms of foot massage were based on the principle that energy zones run throughout the body. This principle, known as zone therapy, was developed further in the early 19th century when practitioners discovered that applying pressure along the zones could ease underlying problems in other parts of the body. The feet were discovered to be by far the most effective area to work on, being highly sensitive and responsive with thousands of nerve endings. Reflexology was introduced to Britain in the early 1960s, and continues to grow in popularity
